Frequently Asked Questions about
Couples Counseling

  • Westlake Family Counseling offers a variety of trauma-informed, relational therapy treatment options, including Internal Family Systems/Intimacy from the Inside Out, Emotional Attachment Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and other professionally recognized systems-based approaches.

Weekly or bi-weekly 90-minute sessions are available to help couples navigate their conflict, pain, and desire to reconnect. Sessions can be held virtually, but in-person therapy is recommended for the best chance at achieving meaningful connection.

Intensive couples counseling sessions are offered on a periodic basis. Intensive counseling happens in a concentrated block of time, usually a full day, multiple days, or a weekend. Sessions can run from three to six hours per day and can be a good option for couples in crisis.

  • The process begins with scheduling your free 15 minute consultation. During this introductory virtual meeting, you and your therapist will discuss your personal therapy needs, including scheduling and budget considerations. You will be free to take all the time you need to think things over and schedule your first session, should you decide to move forward.

  • Westlake Family Counseling understands the importance of targeted therapy with an emphasis on learning to speak and listen carefully in entirely new ways, providing the key to unlocking repeated patterns of conflict. Often, even as they fight, each partner may be wondering “Do you hear me?  Am I safe with you? Will you meet my needs?”  Through a process of individual work and looking inward through the couples therapy provided at Westlake Family Counseling, each partner can experience deep healing, which in turn promotes compassion, and safer, braver conversations that encourage openness and connection.

Westlake Family Counseling also takes great care in ensuring knowledgeable and culturally competent therapy services for special populations, including those in Consensually Non-Monogamous Relationship structures, and members of the LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and differently-abled communities. Therapy services are available in ASL for those who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Westlake Family Counseling offers a sliding scale in lieu of insurance, with the goal of promoting therapy access for all.
